1986 . . . The History . . . 23 Years

The necessary nonsense that is the Tom Skipper Memorial Terlingua World Championship Golf Shoot- Out was born of a newly rediscovered love for the game and a newly discovered golf course located just the other side of nowhere at a somewhere called Lajitas. That was back in the fall of 1986 when Ranger Bob and his brother Jeff Ritchey played to a tie and agreed to return next year to determine an undisputed World Champion. It was déjà vu all over again except this was golf and not a chili contest as was the case 19 years previous.

The following year approximately twenty invitations were mailed out and between the mail and word-of-mouth ten additional golfers decided to join in the fray.  These golfers would become known as the Original Dirty Dozen. It was determined once again that Ranger Bob and Jeff Ritchey had tied for first place and it would be necessary to return the following year to break the deadlock.  Tracy Keeling won the only prize with his closest-to-the-pin effort.  An embroidered bag strap was graciously donated by the club manager, Jack Simpson.

From this humble and farcical beginning a new Terlingua whoopty-do to do took on a life of its own - it got as big, and remains as big, as golf cart availability allows.

Post-Tournament Traditions

  • Early On

It all started with a little too much daylight being available at the conclusion of an early Terlingua World Championship Golf Shoot-Out. Ranger Bob and Jeff weren't ready to put the clubs up while the sun was still hanging so high above the horizon. So off they did go for another round of nine holes. It became apparent on the fifth tee box that darkness would come before the final five holes could be completed. What to do? Collaboration and deliberation delivered a solution to the conundrum. No recollection that beer played a part in the thought process, but if so, how would one remember?

So was christened the 59th hole, a par 8 cross country golf excursion from the 5th tee to the 9th green. This unique golf tract required some one-of-a-kind stipulations; that being the use of only one club and only one golf ball. Seems the score ended in a tie, once again a matter to be settled same place, same time, the next year.
